Shiva Shells | Tumbled

  • $5.00

Shiva shells are the calcified opercula of marine gastropods, primarily from the Turbinidae family, composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) in the form of aragonite. They develop as a protective covering for the snail’s opening, with their characteristic spiral structure resulting from incremental growth influenced by movement patterns and mineral deposition. With a Mohs hardness of approximately 3-4, they are relatively soft compared to other biominerals. Found in coastal and shallow marine environments, they are commonly collected in regions such as India, Thailand, Australia, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. These structures naturally accumulate in marine sediments or wash up on beaches, making them an accessible subject for biomineralization studies.

Localities: India, Thailand, Australia, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines

Rarity: Modertate

Hardness: 3 - 4
