Fire Agate is a rare variety of chalcedony (SiO₂) with an iridescent, fiery appearance caused by thin layers of iron oxide (limonite) within the stone. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, it is durable and well-suited for jewelry, often cut into cabochons to enhance its vibrant play-of-color, which can display flashes of red, orange, gold, and green. Found primarily in Mexico and the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, and New Mexico), fire agate forms in volcanic environments where silica-rich water deposits layers over time. Its unique, natural iridescence makes it highly prized by collectors and lapidaries.

Localities: USA, Mexico

Rarity: Common

Hardness: 6.5 - 7
