Peridot is a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, composed of magnesium iron silicate (Mg₂SiO₄). Its distinct yellow-green to olive-green color is due to the presence of iron in its composition. Peridot has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, making it moderately durable for jewelry but prone to scratching. It is found in volcanic rocks and some meteorites, with major sources including Arizona (USA), Egypt, Myanmar, China, and Pakistan. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one color, with variations in shade depending on iron content.
