Opalite is a man-made glass that mimics the appearance of natural opals, known for its soft, milky translucence and subtle blue or rainbow-like glow when light passes through it. It is often mistaken for natural opal but lacks the water content and internal structure that create the opal’s signature play-of-color. Opalite has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6, making it relatively durable for jewelry and decorative items. While synthetic, it is widely used in jewelry and carvings and is produced in various locations worldwide.
