Tanzanite is a rare blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite (Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)₃(OH)), colored by trace amounts of vanadium. With a Mohs hardness of 6-7, it is softer than sapphire and requires care in jewelry settings. Known for its strong pleochroism, it can appear blue, violet, or burgundy depending on the viewing angle. Found exclusively in Tanzania’s Merelani Hills, it is one of the world’s most limited gemstones. Most tanzanite is heat-treated to enhance its blue-violet hue by removing brownish tones. Its striking color and rarity make it highly valued in fine jewelry.
