Soapstone

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of talc (Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂), along with varying amounts of chlorite, pyroxenes, micas, and carbonates. With a Mohs hardness of 1-2, it is soft, easily carvable, and has a smooth, soapy texture due to its high talc content. Resistant to heat, acids, and moisture, soapstone is commonly used for countertops, sinks, fireplaces, and cookware, as well as in carvings and laboratory surfaces. It retains and distributes heat efficiently, making it valuable for stoves and cookware. Major sources include Brazil, India, Finland, and the United States (particularly Vermont and Virginia). Its non-porous nature and chemical stability make it an ideal material for both artistic and functional applications.
