Malachite | Tumbled

  • $16.00

Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral with a hardness of 3.5 to 4. Most Malachite seen on the market is cut from botryoidal masses with fibrous banding of lighter and darker shades of vivid green. Malachite may occur, rarely, in crystal form, and the crystals are usually long prismatic to needle-shaped. It can also take stalactitic form or occur as a crust. Its name may be derived from the Greek word for its color, malache (mallow), or because of its low hardness, from the Greek malakos (soft). Malachite was known in Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. It was also popular with ancient Greeks and Romans, for jewelry, ornaments or in its powder form, for eye shadow. In the Middle Ages, Malachite was believed to protect against evil eye and to cure various types of stomach ailments.
