Bismuth is a brittle, metallic element (Bi, atomic number 83) known for its low toxicity and striking iridescent oxide layer that displays a spectrum of colors. With a Mohs hardness of 2-2.5, it is soft and has a high density similar to lead but is significantly less toxic. Bismuth crystallizes in a distinct stair-step hopper formation due to its unique growth pattern when cooled from a molten state. It is primarily sourced as a byproduct of lead, copper, tin, and silver mining, with major producers including China, Mexico, and Bolivia. Used in pharmaceuticals, alloys, and pigments, bismuth is also popular for lab-grown crystals, prized for their vibrant, geometric structures and metallic luster.
