Ammolite is an opal-like organic gemstone composed primarily of aragonite (CaCO₃) and derived from the fossilized shells of ammonites. It exhibits an iridescent play-of-color due to its layered microstructure, which diffracts light, producing vivid hues such as red, green, blue, and purple. With a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4, it is relatively soft and often stabilized with a protective coating for durability in jewelry. Found primarily in the Bearpaw Formation of Alberta, Canada, ammolite is one of the rarest gemstones and was officially recognized as a gemstone in 1981. It is typically cut into cabochons or inlaid into jewelry, prized for its vibrant, shifting colors and fossilized origin.
