Selenite is a transparent to translucent variety of gypsum, a calcium sulfate mineral with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. It is known for its glassy or silky luster and often forms in long, fibrous, or tabular crystals. Selenite has a Mohs hardness of 2, making it very soft and easily scratched or dissolved in water over time. It is commonly found in Mexico, the United States, Morocco, and Greece, often in evaporite deposits where water has evaporated, leaving behind mineral-rich layers.
