  • $14.00

Polished and cut rough Black Obsidian. Each specimen is approximately 2-3" and self-standing. Made in India.

Black obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled lava with high silica content. It is typically deep black in color and has a glassy, smooth texture with a conchoidal fracture. With a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5, it is relatively brittle and can break into sharp edges, which historically made it useful for tools and weapons. Major sources of black obsidian include the United States (especially in Oregon and California), Mexico, Iceland, and Japan. It is commonly used for jewelry, carvings, and decorative objects.
