Poseidon was the second son of the Titan Cronus and Rhea. He joined Zeus, along with the rest of the Olympians, and waged war against the Titans, eventually emerging victorious. After their victory, the world was divided into three, and Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades each received a portion of existence to oversee. Poseidon, of course, became the God of the Seas. He can create earthquakes with his trident, unleashing devastation on the oceans and all who traverse her. The sea voyagers who worship Poseidon gain his favor and thus are rewarded with safe passage (which sometimes included drowning horses as an ultimate sacrifice to the Master of the Deep!)
