Garnet is a group of silicate minerals with the general formula X₃Y₂(SiO₄)₃, where X and Y represent various metal ions such as iron, aluminum, and calcium. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7.5, garnets are durable and commonly used in jewelry and abrasives. They occur in a range of colors, including red (almandine and pyrope), green (tsavorite and demantoid), orange (spessartine), and even rare blue varieties. Garnets form in metamorphic and igneous rocks and are mined in regions such as India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, the United States, and Russia. Known for their high refractive index, they exhibit strong brilliance and are often faceted or polished for various decorative and industrial applications.
