Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, characterized by its translucent to milky white background with green, brown, or black mineral inclusions that resemble moss or foliage. Despite its name, it does not contain organic material; the inclusions are typically manganese or iron oxide. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, making it durable for use in jewelry and decorative objects.
